IPTV in Mumbai: getting it right in a flat

Mumbai homes bring their own challenges: thick walls, crowded Wi-Fi, housing societies that frown on dishes, and a monsoon that tests everything. Here is practical advice for setting up in this city.

Local realities

Four Mumbai problems, four simple answers

Crowded Wi-Fi in towers

In a tall building, dozens of neighbouring networks fight for the same air. Use the 5 GHz band or, better still, a cable. Moving the router out of a cupboard helps more than you would expect.

No roof rights, no dish

Tenants and many society flats cannot fit a dish without permission. IPTV needs nothing outside your flat, and you can take it with you when your lease ends.

Monsoon weeks

Heavy rain can knock out dishes, and it can also affect local broadband when lines flood. Having your broadband provider’s helpline saved will spare you trouble in July.

Peak hours

The whole building comes home at the same time. Run your speed test at 9 pm, not at noon, and choose your broadband plan with that result in mind.

Small flat, big match

A setup that suits a one-BHK

In a small flat the router is rarely far from the TV, which works in your favour. A short network cable along the skirting board costs very little and gives you the steadiest picture you can get. If a cable is not practical, keep the router high up and in the open.

If you commute, the same login may work on your phone over Wi-Fi at home. Save long viewing for Wi-Fi rather than mobile data, as a film can use up a day’s data allowance quickly.

Questions from Mumbai homes

Do I need permission from my society?

For IPTV itself, no. Nothing is fitted outside your flat. If your society has an exclusive arrangement with a broadband or cable provider, check that your internet connection is suitable and meets its rules.

Will it still work in heavy rain?

Rain does not affect IPTV directly, as there is no dish involved. It will keep working for as long as your broadband does. During severe flooding, local networks can go down, and no internet service can get around that.

Do you send someone to install it?

No. Everything is done in an app, and we guide you on WhatsApp. If you would rather have someone in person, a friend or relative can follow the same steps with us.
